GIVE SEATTLE

A constellation of Seattle artists, businesses and nonprofits have aligned to release GIVE, a downloadable music and video compendium to benefit Arts Corps, Seattle’s largest nonprofit arts educator, along with Ballard Food Bank, Rainier Valley Food Bank, University District Food Bank and West Seattle Food Bank. GIVE is a snapshot of the incredible creativity and diversity that defines Seattle’s music community in 2009.

Local artists providing exclusive material include Fleet Foxes, Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie), David Bazan, D. Black, The Dutchess and the Duke, Visqueen, Champagne Champagne and many more.

The GIVE compilation – conceived and initiated by Caffe Vita, which is producing, curating and funding the project – is available online at giveseattle.org as well as in Caffé Vita shops, Easy Street Records, Sonic Boom Records, University Book Stores, The Crocodile and Neumos. These outlets are carrying GIVE packages, including physical cards with a redemption code for the download, as ready-to-give presents.

A full 100 percent of sales will go directly to GIVE beneficiaries.

Easy Street Records

Easy Street Records set up shop in West Seattle in 1988. Over the 20 years, they have added a busy little café to the original store, a big fun second store in Queen Anne, a popular new website, and an After Hours series every Friday night. This is Seattle’s record store. The West Seattle store is located in “the Junction”, a pretty sleepy little part of town 20 years ago, but now one of the busiest little shopping districts in the city. It has also hosted instores by artists such as Mudhoney and Pearl Jam. The Queen Anne location opened in 2002. It is a much larger store located near downtown Seattle and the thriving Belltown District. Queen Anne boasts a full size stage nestled behind a roll up garage door, which has hosted some of the best known names in music including Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, Band of Horses, The Shins and many, many more.

More Music @ The Moore

More Music @ The Moore is a training and performance program for selected young artists representing diverse music genres. The program provides young artists training and rehearsal time with professional musicians; production and promotional support; recording experience; and the opportunity to perform live in concert at a professional venue, The Moore Theatre, as well as other local venues. Boston based composer/conductor/musician, Daniel Bernard Roumain (dbr.music.com) serves as Music Director. Artists are selected through auditions and invitation.

Gibson Guitars

Gibson Guitars graciously donated a new guitar to Rotary Music for Life in honor of the 2009 Seattle City of Music Breakthrough Award recipient, Fleet Foxes.

Rotary Music for Life

The creative concept for Rotary Music4Life™ was born in the fall of 2007 and is an ongoing program. The immediate goal is clear: put musical instruments in good playing condition into the hands of children and youth wishing to use them now. Procure the instruction, supplies and support (like instrument maintenance) to strengthen the elementary instrumental music program and ensure strong music programs throughout Seattle Public Schools. We are acquiring musical instruments, supplies and other resources from members of Rotary clubs in the city of Seattle and from other citizens who understand the value of music in a child’s life. We work with instrument manufacturers, rental agencies, wholesalers, retailers, and others around the world who have access to serviceable musical instruments. Anyone who loves music and believes in music education for all children can join the effort!

MusicTech

The Pacific Northwest Chapter in partnership with the Seattle Office of Film and Music, KEXP and ASCAP proudly presented the 4th Annual GRAMMY MusicTech Summit 09 at the Experience Music Project in Seattle on October 15-16, 2009. The two day long event featured 10 panels and keynote address by echomusic Co-Founder, Mark Montgomery.

Audioasis

The first Saturday of every month, KEXP (90.3FM Seattle and KEXP.ORG) broadcasts its local music program "Audioasis" (Saturdays 6-9pm) from the Sunset in Seattle followed by a music showcase featuring live performances from breakthrough Pacific Northwest bands. All door proceeds benefit a different local charity each month. The program is designed to raise money for local organizations, while boosting awareness of their mission and the impact they have on the community. Additionally, this initiative helps to create meaningful connections between KEXP listeners and their community. During a month-long campaign, KEXP features the chosen organization through website promotion, on-air messages and produces a live interview with organization representatives.

Reverb

Seattle Weekly's REVERB is a day-long music festival that showcases emerging ALL local music talent. REVERB features over 60 local acts who perform at venues all within walking distance on Seattle's Ballard Ave. The event celebrates the diversity of Seattle music and features performers in genres as diverse as rock, punk, alt country/roots rock, blues, jazz, DJs, hip-hop and more.

Subsonic

Subsonic is a Seattle Music Blog serving up the latest from the local music scene. Featuring CD and show reviews, a Concert Calendar of recommended events and all the real to-do that's smart, funny, engaging and unpretentious

Noise For The Needy

Noise For The Needy is a Seattle-based non-profit organization that raises money for charitable causes through the production of live music shows.

In 1991, Dave Green, a Seattle native, was in college in southern California and wanted to raise money for Mary's Kitchen, a struggling soup kitchen run by Mary McAnena. Dave worked on a college radio station and booked bands part-time for Chapman University. "I was inspired after working at a homeless kitchen in Hart park near my campus. Most of the students had no idea that there was this problem of homelessness right down the street, I wanted to get these students' attention so I came up with the idea to put together a benefit concert that would draw attention to the problem of homelessness, give local bands some exposure and create a event that would draw students together," Dave explains.

One year later, Dave, with support from his friends and the university, put together his first Noise for the Needy concert. Mary, in her eighties, had never received this type of support for her cause and was extremely grateful. Noise for the Needy was a major success and continued for more then a decade. "I can remember by the third Noise for the Needy, I went to visit Mary's Kitchen and saw this 'complex' with showers and a clothing distribution program. One of the staff took me aside and said, 'Your concerts built this.' It was a pretty amazing moment."

The shows began to draw a diverse set of performers. Bands participating in shows have included Black Eyed Peas, Ozomotli, Rancid, the Offspring, Vandals, Goldfinger, Voo Doo Glow Skulls, Save Ferris, and Long Beach Dub All Stars. NFTN has shown well over a hundred bands, raising over $100,000 for local charities. Dave remained as an organizer and consultant until 2003, when he went on to get his Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California. He still holds a director's position.

In 2004, Richard Green (Dave's brother), with the help of Jeff Henry, started the first Noise for the Needy show in Seattle. The first show included four local bands and took place at Nectar Lounge in Fremont. NFTN has since become a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and the festival has grown to a 5-day event spanning clubs all over the city of Seattle. Since 2006, NFTN has worked with Talib Kweli, The Black Angels, Art Brut, Two Gallants, Throw me the Statue, Okkervil River, CSS, The Constantines, The Handsome Family, The Blakes, Head Like a Kite, Feral Children, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, Slender Means, The Cops, The Purrs, Christy McWilson, Mark Pickerel, Hypatia Lake, Fourth City DJs, and many other talented local musicians.

Earshot Jazz

Earshot Jazz is a nonprofit arts organization formed in 1984 in service to the growing community of jazz artists and audiences in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Earshot publishes a monthly news magazine, provides educational programs and special projects in jazz, and presents nearly 100 concerts annually, including Seattle's major jazz festival. Earshot has established an international reputation for the quality of its programming and services while becoming an integral part of Seattle's vibrant cultural scene.

Early in the 1990s, Earshot Jazz was recognized as one of 20 primary sites in the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest National Jazz Network. Beginning in March 2000, we joined 11 other key organizations in the US to comprise JazzNet, a significant jazz support initiative of the Doris Duke Charitable Fund.

Earshot Jazz is also one of the founding member organizations of the Western Jazz Presenters Network. Earshot receives regular support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Washington State, King County and Seattle arts commissions, its members and donors, and many community partners.

Earshot's principal areas of activity include a monthly jazz publication celebrating more than 24 years of publication, a comprehensive calendar of regional jazz, and various educational programs including scholarships, workshops, residencies, and class room performances.

Sonic Boom Records has been a pillar in the Seattle music community since 1997. Its stores have always been friendly and lively social hubs. No Depression

No Depression has been the foremost journalistic authority on roots music for well over a decade, publishing 75 issues from 1995 to 2008. No Depression ceased publishing magazines in 2008 and took to the web. We have made the contents of those issues accessible online via an extensive archive and also feature a robust community website with blogs, photos, videos, music, news, discussion, and more.  Visit us online at www.NoDepression.com The first annual No Depression festival took place in July of 2009 and was a huge success!
